VenueRethinking Drinking

When choosing a venue for your ‘Alcohol Information Night’ it's important for people to be comfortable and relaxed, and for there to be adequate space for group activities. Look at using a community venue if your school doesn't have an appropriate facility. You may need extra facilities if serving food.

Arrange seating as informally as you can, given that the audience will initially have to face the speakers. To help your audience form into small groups or circles at some time during the evening, movable seating is a real advantage.

Informative posters and display materials can be downloaded from the Resources page on this site or, why not design some of your own.

Consider catering. It doesn’t have to be anything too elaborate; just tea, coffee and biscuits will suffice. Remember that your choice of venue may affect catering possibilities and you may have to supply your own urn, cups, crockery, tea, coffee etc.

Consider equipment. A data projector, computer, screen, television and DVD/video player may all be required - depending on your agenda. Remember to check that you have these available if you need them.
Other useful items could include:

  • a whiteboard and markers
  • butchers' paper and markers
  • name tags for participants

5 Safe Party Tips
  1. Restrict your party to 'invitation only'
  2. Keep emergency numbers and a first aid kit handy
  3. Have non-alcoholic options available
  4. Think about how you will monitor alcohol intake and how much alcohol you will serve - what sort of supervision will there be?
  5. Consider how your guests will get home - will there be designated drivers?
